The AI Behind the Outboard Scanner

Advanced computer vision AI + a 5,000+ engine reference database spanning outboards, sterndrives, inboards, electric & jet. One photo in, full engine profile out. Here's how it works.

Why Listing on eBay or FB Marketplace Sucks

Every other platform makes YOU do all the work. We let AI do it.

eBay / FB Marketplace / Craigslist

  • You guess at make, model, year, horsepower
  • Buyers don't trust your specs - "Is this really a 150?"
  • Listing takes 15-20 minutes of manual data entry
  • No verification. Scams and ghost listings everywhere
  • Your listing drowns in a sea of unrelated junk
  • Zero engine-specific filtering (stroke type? shaft length?)

OutboardListings.com + AI Scanner

  • AI identifies make, model, HP, year, stroke type from a photo
  • Cross-referenced against 5,000+ verified engine models
  • Listing created in under 2 minutes
  • Paid listings only - every seller is serious
  • Purpose-built for outboard engines, nothing else
  • Filter by HP, stroke, make, year, shaft - find exactly what you're looking for
Phase 1

Visual Feature Extraction

When you upload a photo, our AI doesn't just "look" at the image — it dissects it. Our vision model processes every pixel, identifying visual features that even experienced mechanics might miss.

Cowling Shape & Color

Manufacturer-specific silhouettes, vents, and color schemes

Decal & Logo Analysis

OCR reads model numbers, HP ratings, brand marks

Proportional Analysis

Size ratios estimate displacement and horsepower

AI feature detection overlay on outboard engine showing bounding boxes around logo, model number, and color zones

Multiple visual signals analyzed simultaneously

Shape, color, text, proportions, vent patterns, and logo placement are all weighted and scored to produce a confidence rating. Higher confidence = more reliable identification.

Phase 2

Neural Network Classification

The extracted features pass through a multi-layer classification engine. Think of it as the AI's "brain" - it's comparing what it sees against everything it's ever learned about outboard engines. Every curve, every font, every shade of gray.

The model was trained on thousands of engine images across every major manufacturer: Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Evinrude, Johnson, Tohatsu, and more. It knows the difference between a 2005 Yamaha F150 and a 2012 Yamaha F150 by the vent pattern on the cowling.

What the AI evaluates per image:

• Cowling geometry• Color signature• Logo placement• Text / decal OCR• Vent pattern• Lower unit shape• Tilt tube config• Prop hub style• Mounting bracket• Year-specific trim

Layered classification narrows the field fast

First the manufacturer, then the model family, then horsepower and year range — each layer builds on the last, producing a composite confidence score across all fields.

Phase 3

Database Cross-Reference

Here's where OutboardListings.com has an unfair advantage. After the AI identifies the engine, we cross-reference it against our proprietary database of 5,000+ verified engine models.

This database wasn't pulled from a spreadsheet. We compiled data from manufacturer catalogs, dealer inventories, marine parts databases, and spec sheets — then cleaned, verified, and structured every data point. It took months to build and we continue to expand it daily.

The result: when the AI says "Yamaha F150," our database instantly appends 2670cc, 4-stroke, 474 lbs, 20" or 25" shaft - specs no photo can reveal.

What the database covers:

  • Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Evinrude, Johnson, Tohatsu and 30+ more brands
  • Every engine record includes HP, displacement, weight, cylinders, stroke type
  • Vintage models (1950s+) through current production year
  • Continuously updated as manufacturers release new models

About these numbers: The 5,000+ engine models and 13,800+ parts in our database are reference specifications — not live inventory for sale. They are the knowledge base our AI scanner cross-references to identify your engine or part from a photo and auto-fill technical details like HP, displacement, weight, year, and compatible fitments. The actual items for sale on OutboardListings.com are listed by individual sellers and dealers. Learn more →

AI identification + database verification = higher confidence

When the vision AI's prediction matches a known engine in our database, the confidence score jumps. That's the difference between "pretty sure" and "bank on it."

Phase 4

The Learning Loop

Every time a seller corrects a detection, that correction gets fed back into the system. The AI gets smarter with every single listing.

User Uploads Photo

AI Detects & Classifies

User Confirms or Corrects

System Gets Smarter

Real corrections from real sellers

When a seller adjusts a detection — say, correcting 115 HP to 150 HP — that knowledge is permanently incorporated. The next time the AI sees a similar engine, it already knows. No synthetic training data. Just humans keeping the AI honest.

Coming Next

Scan a Part. Get the Fit.

Our engine scanner is live. The next build extends the same computer-vision pipeline to parts identification — the missing tool in every marine classifieds platform.

Lower Unit ID

Is that a MerCruiser Alpha One or a Bravo Three? Snap the sterndrive and we tell you — plus gear ratio, year range, and which boats it fits.

The #1 question in every used-sterndrive transaction. We're going to answer it from a photo.

Gearcase & Prop Match

Photo of a lower unit, propeller, or powerhead and the AI returns the part number, compatible engines, and cross-references against our 13,800+ reference parts catalog for compatible fitments.

Zero guessing. Zero cross-referencing spec sheets by hand.

Powerhead & Block Detect

Bare block on a pallet? Powerhead pulled from the cowl? The AI identifies it by casting marks, intake layout, and bolt pattern — cross-references against OEM records.

Turns rebuildable cores into salable inventory in seconds.

Compatibility Lookup

Point your phone at a part, get the full list of engine years and models it fits. Powered by our 5,000+ engine database + parts-fitment mapping.

Buyers stop asking “will this fit my motor?” Sellers close faster.

Want early access when it ships?

We're building the parts scanner next. Dealers and large-volume sellers get first look — drop us a note and we'll loop you in when the beta opens.
