The fuel filter. The $8 part you replace once a year. Clogged solid with crud.

The Basics Checklist

Before you go deep on any outboard problem, run through these:

• Is there fuel in the tank? (Don't laugh. It happens.)
• Is the kill switch lanyard connected?
• Is the fuel line kinked or the primer bulb hard?
• Is the battery charged?
• Are the spark plugs fouled?
• Is the fuel filter clean?
• Is the vent on the fuel tank open?

The Lesson

Nine times out of ten, the problem is something simple you overlooked because you were too focused on complicated possibilities. Check the obvious first. Always.
