The Marine Owner’s Guide to Extended Warranties: Boats, Motors, Trailers, Electronics & Beyond

Owning a boat used to mean the engine was the only thing under warranty — everything else was on you. That’s changed in a big way. The marine extended-warranty market in 2026 is healthier, more competitive, and far broader than most owners realize. Hulls. Outboards. Sterndrives. Diesels. Trailers. Helm electronics. Stereos. Upholstery. Even gel-coat and fit-and-finish. If it’s on your boat, there’s likely a coverage plan that fits it.

This is a positive look at the providers who are doing it right — the ones earning happy renewals from boat owners around the country. We’ll walk through what each part of your rig can be covered for, then list the OEM and aftermarket players worth a call.

What Modern Marine Warranties Actually Cover

The old Stigma was “extended warranties only cover the powerhead.” Not anymore. Today’s plans are bundled across five major categories:

1. The Hull, Gel-Coat & Fit-and-Finish

Many boat builders now back their hulls with limited lifetime structural warranties (typically 5–10 years for the deck and stringer system). Plus you’ll see 3- to 5-year gel-coat warranties against blistering, fading, and crazing. Aftermarket extension plans pick up where the factory leaves off — covering hull repairs, gel-coat refinishing, and even rub-rail and console damage.

2. Powertrain — Outboards, Sterndrives, Inboards & Diesels

This is the historical heart of marine warranty work. Whether you’re running a Yamaha 4-stroke, a Mercury Verado, a MerCruiser sterndrive, a Volvo Penta diesel, or a Suzuki DF-series, all of the major OEMs sell extended powertrain protection — usually adding 2–4 additional years on top of the factory warranty. Aftermarket providers cover everything from used outboards to repower swap-in packages.

3. Trailers

One of the most under-appreciated parts of any rig. Extended warranty plans for boat trailers cover axles, brakes, bearings, lights, winches, even galvanizing corrosion. If you’re hauling regularly, this is one of the highest-value plans you can buy.

4. Helm Electronics & Stereos

Modern boats are floating IT departments. Multifunction displays from Garmin, Lowrance, Simrad, Furuno, and Raymarine can run $3,000–$15,000 by themselves. Plus your JL Audio, Wet Sounds, JBL, or Kicker stereo system. Aftermarket warranty providers now bundle electronics and audio coverage into a single plan — protecting against power surges, water intrusion, and component failure.

5. Upholstery, Canvas & Interior Fit-and-Finish

This is the newest growth area. Plans now cover upholstery (vinyl, foam, stitching), Bimini tops, T-tops, snap-in carpet, and helm wiring trim. If a seam splits or your captain’s chair pedestal cracks, you’re covered.

OEM-Backed Extended Warranty Plans

If you bought new (or you’re buying a used boat under 10 years old), the OEM plans should be your first call. They’re honored at any authorized dealer in North America — no hassle, no claim disputes.

Yamaha Marine — Y.E.S. (Yamaha Extended Service)

One of the most respected programs in the industry. Y.E.S. extends factory coverage by 1, 2, or 3 additional years for a flat rate. Available on most Yamaha 4-stroke outboards. Transferable to a second owner for a small fee.

Mercury Marine — Mercury Product Protection

Mercury’s plan is split into two tiers: Gold (full mechanical coverage, including labor) and Platinum (everything Gold covers plus consequential damage). Available for Mercury outboards, MerCruiser sterndrives, and Mercury Diesel. Up to 8 years total coverage.

Suzuki Marine — Suzuki Extended Protection (SEP)

Up to 5 additional years of bumper-to-bumper coverage on top of Suzuki’s already-strong 5-year factory warranty. That’s a potential 10 years of coverage — the longest in the industry on a major-brand outboard.

Honda Marine — Honda Marine Extended Service

Adds up to 4 additional years on top of Honda’s 5-year factory warranty. Includes engine, gearcase, electrical, and mid-section. Transferable.

Volvo Penta — Volvo Penta Extended Coverage

Coverage for the full sterndrive and diesel inboard lineup. Up to 4 years total. Particularly popular with center-console offshore owners running diesel power.

Boat Builders — Brand-Specific Extensions

Many builders now sell their own structural and gel-coat extensions. Boston Whaler, Grady-White, Sea Ray, Bayliner, Regal, Cobalt, Chaparral, Pursuit, and Robalo all run their own extension programs through their dealer networks.

Aftermarket & Independent Extended Warranty Providers

If your factory warranty has lapsed, or you’re buying used, or you want a single plan covering boat + motor + trailer + electronics together, these are the go-to names:

Wozencraft Insurance Agency

One of the longest-running marine insurance and warranty agencies in the U.S. Specializes in full-rig packages covering boats, motors, trailers, AND high-end electronics. Strong reputation for honoring claims quickly.

Marine Protection Services (MPS)

An independent extended-warranty administrator working with thousands of dealers nationwide. Plans available for boats up to 12 years old. Covers powertrain, electrical, fuel, helm, and steering. Tiered coverage levels.

BoatUS Boat Insurance & Mechanical Breakdown

Best known for towing, BoatUS also offers mechanical breakdown coverage as a rider on their main policy. Especially popular for trailerable boats and personal watercraft. Membership required.

Progressive Boat & Watercraft Insurance

Progressive bundles a Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) endorsement with their main boat policy. Easy add-on, single bill, and one of the friendlier deductibles in the industry.

GEICO Marine Insurance

The marine arm of GEICO (originally BoatUS Insurance). Offers extended mechanical and electrical coverage for outboards, inboards, sterndrives, and trailers. Strong digital claims experience.

Ironclad Marine Warranty

A newer player gaining traction in the Gulf Coast and Mid-Atlantic. Aggressively prices multi-year boat + motor + trailer combo plans, often beating OEM pricing on used boats. Transferable ownership.

Endurance Warranty (Marine Division)

Best known for their automotive plans, Endurance launched a marine division covering boats up to 10 years old or 1,000 engine hours. Powertrain and helm-electronics coverage available.

National Marine Warranty (NMW)

Specializes in aftermarket coverage for used boats sold through dealer trade-ins. Common rider-on-purchase plan you’ll see at independent boat dealerships.

What to Look For in a Plan

If you’re shopping a plan in 2026, ask the same five questions every time:

  • Is it administered by a real underwriter? Reputable plans are backed by an A-rated insurance carrier — not a fly-by-night service contract.
  • Is it honored at any authorized dealer? The best plans don’t lock you into a single shop.
  • What’s the deductible? $50–$250 is typical. Watch out for per-component deductibles that can stack.
  • Is it transferable? If you sell the boat in 3 years, a transferable plan adds resale value.
  • What’s actually excluded? Read the fine print on consequential damage, wear-and-tear items, and saltwater corrosion riders.

The Bottom Line

The marine extended-warranty business has matured. There’s a plan for every category — hull, powertrain, trailer, electronics, upholstery — and providers from OEM giants to scrappy aftermarket administrators are competing hard for your renewal dollar.

If you’re buying a new boat or motor, get a quote on the OEM plan first. If you’re buying used, talk to Wozencraft, MPS, Ironclad, or your existing insurance carrier (Progressive, GEICO Marine, BoatUS) about a bundled aftermarket plan.

And no matter what plan you go with, read your contract twice and keep your service records. That’s the difference between a smooth claim and a headache.
